Drawing 1

3 bottles

The process of the charcoal sketch

Resolved Work

These objects are a gin bottle, a honey jar, and a Mackenzie gelatin case.

It took me a couple of hours to complete the drawing.

I used charcoal, a kneaded eraser, and white pastel.

As a reflection, I found it difficult to control the drawing lines because I used a cylinder-shaped charcoal stick. I should have sharpened the charcoal to get a finer point.

Also, I noticed that all the highlights disappeared after I applied the fixative spray, so I need to be more careful about that next time.

In addition, I need to be more mindful about placing the objects more centrally on the canvas.

The contrast in this painting wasn’t enough yet

Big portrait. 70cm x 100cm  back side of wrapping paper, charcoal.

This face is fictional based on my own portrait.

Duration was about 20 min

I changed to my self portrait from fictional face. Duration about 3 hours.

Resolved Work

I saw myself with mirror and change fictional portrait to self portrait.

This was a first time I drew self portrait with charcoal.

Painting 1

Still Life

I didn’t like the background colour and colours are not opaque.

Resolved Work

I had fun creating this work for the module. The use of round and oval shapes reminds me of children’s toys, which gave the piece a playful feeling Working with these forms brought a sense of calm and peace to my mind during the process.

Painting 2

Portrait

Medium: Acrylic paints on cardboard
Duration: 4 hours

Freehand work

I accidentally made a hole on the bottom lip while sketching, which made the process more difficult. Painting on cardboard was not easy—it doesn’t absorb or hold paint in the same way as canvas or paper. However, it was a valuable experience and helped me understand how different surfaces affect the painting process.

Acrylic on A4 size acrylic pad.  Duration 5 hours.

Skin tone practice

Acrylic paints Ultra marine blue and white.

Duration 2 hours.

Resolved Work

A4 size Acrylic on watercolour paper.

I combined two of my previous portrait and decided to transform the first realistic portrait into an abstract one. Half of her face, part of her head, and her shoulder have been changed based on my second draft portrait.

The white stroke lines represent hope, while the ghost-like rose flowers in the top right corner symbolize porcelain—reflecting her fragile, delicate, and elegance state of mind.

Painting 5

Abstract with Masking Tape

This work was created using acrylic paints on a watercolour pad, and it. Took me three days to complete. I attempted to paint a forest scene with intricate tree trunks and used masking tape to define certain areas.

However, when I tried to reposition the tape, it tore the surface of the canvas pad. I later discovered through online reviews that this particular pad is not suitable for masking tape, as it easily rips.

Fortunately, I had another canvas pad available. I started the painting again from scratch and applied gesso beforehand to strengthen the surface. This time, the process went smoothly, and I was able to complete the task successfully. I normally prepare the sketch by grid method.

The concept for this painting came to me spontaneously. Although the module required an abstract approach, I still wanted to include elements of realistic depiction. I decided to divide the painting into sections-some realistic, some altered in colour-to create a contrast between the two styles.

I enjoyed this technique and may explore similar compositions in the future.
